Mistral AI just closed a €3 billion Series D round at a post-money valuation above €21 billion — the largest equity fundraising ever completed by a European technology company. The Paris-based lab, founded only three years ago, nearly doubled its valuation in twelve months.
Samsung Electronics led the round, with co-lead investment from EQT's Scaleup Europe Fund and existing backer PSG Equity. New investors Advent and BlackRock-managed funds joined the cap table, while Andreessen Horowitz, ASML, and NVIDIA all participated again.
What the money buys
Mistral says the fresh capital will go toward three things: scaling compute and data-center infrastructure, pushing frontier model research, and accelerating commercialization and international expansion. The company already tapped debt markets in March 2026 (UTC), raising $830 million earmarked specifically for data-center buildouts.
The round caps a meteoric rise. Mistral was founded in April 2023 (UTC+2) by Arthur Mensch, Guillaume Lample, and Timothée Lacroix — former researchers at Google DeepMind and Meta. Its Series C in late 2025 valued the company at €11.7 billion, with ASML leading at €1.3 billion. Twelve months later, that figure has nearly doubled.
Why Samsung matters
Samsung's lead investment is the strategic headline here. The Korean electronics giant has been quietly building an AI and robotics portfolio, and backing Europe's strongest open-weight model lab gives it a direct line to frontier model development — useful when your hardware roadmap depends on running AI efficiently on-device and in data centers.
EQT's Scaleup Europe Fund, an EU-backed vehicle, signals continued political support for "sovereign AI" in Europe. Mistral has positioned itself as the continental alternative to OpenAI and Anthropic, and regulators in Brussels and Paris have treated it as a strategic asset.

For a company that didn't exist three years ago, €21 billion is an extraordinary number. It also underscores how concentrated AI capital has become — the same handful of strategic investors (Samsung, NVIDIA, ASML, a16z, BlackRock) keep showing up in every major round, each trying to secure a seat at the table before the next model leap.
Mistral's challenge now is the same one every well-funded lab faces: turn that capital into models and products that customers actually pay for at scale. The money is there. The execution is what comes next.
